Multiplication & Division

Apex-Math offers two products to improve multiplication in children. First, we suggest you read our articles on teaching multiplication and division. Once the child has a good grasp of their multiplication facts, we need them to start thinking “backwards” in order to apply division. When the student sees 4X5, they can come up with the answer 20. Now, the student needs to be able to see the number 20 and know what numbers divide evenly into 20. This involves both simple division facts as well as rules of divisibility. Our products work on both these concepts.

First, our DIVISIBILITY HANDBOOK provides students with all the rules of divisibility in a neat organized chart form. It starts the student off with simple checks and then builds into the harder checks. Initially, the worksheets just ask the student to “check” if the number is divisible by a certain number: Is 20 divisible by 5? How do you know? After students get comfortable with this step, students are asked to think about the factors of 20. These skills are vital to success in Algebra and beyond, so learning them now will ultimately help your child for years to come. The Handbook comes complete with lots of practice and answers for the parent.

Second, our game MULTIPLICATION GO FISH provides students with practice in both division facts and divisibility. The product comes with cards that can easily be printed on card stock at home, cut out and used to play the game. The rules are given in two forms – one for beginners and one for the more advanced student. The game is a fun way for your student to practice divisibility, division facts, and multiplication facts. Students must go “forwards” and “backwards” when playing the game – if they have a 3X5 in their hand, they ask “Do you have any 15′s? ” This requires them to go “forward” and know that 3X5=15. Additionally, if they have a 20 in their hand, they must ask, “Do you have a 5X4?” This requires them to go “backwards.” They would need to use divisibility rules to figure out what 20 is divisible by and then use the division fact that 20 / 5 = 4.
